Speaker Antonio MELOTO

Biography

Antonio Meloto is the chairman & founder of "Gawad Kalinga" a filipino NGO fighting poverty through an holistic development approach. Based on shared values between the rich and poor, it integrates building intentional communities, the GK-Villages, through seven programs (values formation, village construction, education, health, food-sufficiency, livelihood / job & social enterprise creation, sustainable environment). Its mission is to eradicate poverty for 5 million families by 2024.

To this date 2400 communities have been established throughout the Philippines, impacting the lives of nearly one million Filipinos and with the help of more than one million volunteers over the past 10 years. GK acts as a "middle brother", a convergence platform to connect the rich & poor. It is a catalyst to attract co-creation and collaboration, goodwill, skills, donations and investments from individuals, private & public companies, local political authorities, foundations and educational institutions.

Since 2010, through the concept of the "GK Farm Village University" (25 farms are planned), the Center for Social Innovation (CSI) flourished. It is dedicated to incubating social business and intends to motivate the most talented filipino graduates to create their own social business. The main focus is to utilise the 12 million hectares of unproductive and abandoned natural resources in the country in a sustainable manner. CSI provides mentorship support to young local & int'l entrepreneurs both in terms of finance, marketing, communication, supply & logistics, distribution, human resources and partnerships with private/public institutions or individuals. GK-CSI has successfully incubated several social enterprises that are competing with main stream markets. These include "Human Nature" (specialized in organic personal care products now #1 in this sector in the Philippines within 5 years), Bayani Brew (new beverage created by GK-beneficiaries), Plush & Play (toys) or GET (Electric bus to replace highly polluting Jeepneys).

Large corporations such as Schneider-Electric, Air France-KLM, Lafarge, Hyundai, Nestle, Philips, Procter & Gamble, Shell, Unilever, HP, Microsoft, HSBC or Credit Suisse, partner with Gawad Kalinga. As an example, in a GK-village in Davao, Selecta has created an agricultural sector where villagers became part of its suppliers, thus ensuring their self-sufficiency. In 2013, a partnership with Schneider Electric enabled the production and the management of solar energy for the 1st Farm Village University, for irrigation of the rice fields around the farm.

Tony Meloto has been recognised as a distinct example for « transformational leadership ». He has written the book “Builder of Dreams” in 2009 and "The Genius of the Poor" co-written by British author Thomas Graham will be published in 2014. Tony has won numerous awards: in 2012, the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship (USA/Oxford), and Social Entrepreneur of the World award from the World Entrepreneurship Forum (France), in 2011 the Nikkei Asia Prize for Regional Growth (Japan), and in 2010 "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" award in the Philippines (Ernst & Young, Schwab Foundation), shortly before being invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos.
