After graduating with a BSc Honours degree in environmental geochemistry from the University of Natal, Stephen joined the mining industry where he has worked for the past 20 years in the sustainable development and environmental management fields. His words on Change:

I believe that mining is a legitimate and fundamentally important part of modern society and that the players in the industry can mine responsibly and contribute to sustainability. It is imperative that the mining industry moves away from seeing itself purely as an extractives industry to being that of a developmental partner for societies in which it operates.

I recently was part of the drafting committee for South Africa's Integrated Report Discussion Paper which was released in 25 January 2011 and specifically compiled the section on materiality assessments. I have written a number of academic papers relating to various environmental topics, including acid mine drainage.
