Speaker Dr Hay Ly EANG

Only survivor of the Khmer Rouge decimated family, Hay Ly Eang arrived in France in 1976 at the age of 21. He became a pharmacist, and opened his shop in 1990 in a working class area of Nanterre. During his trips back to Cambodia, he finds great distress of farmers and their families. He then got the idea to use his knowledge of biology to develop a project for agricultural development: Confirel the company was founded in 2001. The headquarters are in Phnom Penh. Dr. Hay Ly Eang is the CEO.

The cooperative was created to preserve the tree resource providing opportunities for the farmer to ensure a decent life in his village without the need to break down the sugar palms for sale. Confirel aims to develop a range of finished products around the palm. The cooperative uses only renewable parts of palm sugar.

Confirel has 120 producers, 39 people are directly employed within six cooperatives. This is an additional source of income for the villagers. 120 people reap the benefits (40% men, 60% women). Around this project, people receive support in terms of education, training and health.
