Speaker Jonathan MARTENS


Jonathan Martens is a Bio-engineer from University of Brussels and completed his studies with a master of science in environment. He works since 2008 as an environmental project manager at Delhaize Belgium, part of the Delhaize Group, an International food retailer with activities in 10 countries on 3 continents. Before Delhaize he was environmental advisor at the Federation of woodworking and furniture industry. He is currently in charge of different environmental projects inside Delhaize under the umbrella of Sustainability.

At the end of june 2013, Delhaize Belgium's network consisted of 853 stores operated under different formats (Delhaize supermarkets, AD Delhaize, City Delhaize, Proxy Delhaize, Shop ‘n Go, Tom&Co and Red Market), which enables to provide a unique shopping experience together with a high quality service. Delhaize offers a large assortment of more than 20,000 quality products at affordable prices. Thanks to its 6 private brands (365, Delhaize, Taste of Inspirations, Bio, Eco, Care). The banner is part of Delhaize Group, which is present in 10 countries on 3 continents and employs approximately 158,000 people around the world. At the end of 2012, Delhaize Group's network consisted of 3,452 stores.

Delhaize & sustainability

Our top priority in our sustainability strategy towards 2020 is to build the most sustainable private brands in our local markets. In this case, building sustainable private brands means addressing the environmental, social and nutritional aspects of our products. It is our top priority because it is the area in which we can have the biggest impact - the social and environmental footprint of our private brand value chain is much larger than the footprint of our direct operations.

Sustainable seafood

As a food retailer, Delhaize is deeply concerned about the health of the world's fish populations. Balancing the threat of overfishing with the growing demand for healthy food is a complex challenge. As we addressed it, we knew we had to tailor our solutions to each market in which we work. Delhaize Belgium reached significant sustainable seafood milestones in 2012.
